Proceeds benefit Big League Impact Foundation
Baseball has given me so much, including the opportunity to travel around the country and the world. On some of those travels I have seen people who are suffering greatly; suffering without a roof over their head, suffering without enough to eat, suffering without safe drinking water, suffering without proper medical treatment. This season I’m taking the mound to strike out poverty for some of the world’s most vulnerable people.
I’m once again joining up with Adam Wainwright’s Big League Impact and its mission to help meet basic human needs like food, clean water, medical care and shelter. Big League Impact has teamed up with Striking Out Poverty, an initiative of Food for the Hungry, in an effort to restore dignity and hope to people in our local communities and around the globe.
Please join me and take the challenge to strike out poverty by pledging for every strikeout I have this season. I’m personally pledging $1,000 for every 10 strikeouts I get this season. Adam has agreed to match up to $75,000 that we collectively raise, so anything you give will have TRIPLE the impact!
This season we have a specific focus. We are focusing our efforts on the community of Guazumita. This community is located in one of the poorest regions of the Dominican Republic, Monte Plata (about an hour north of Santo Domingo). The community of Guazumita has roughly 250 families and a population of 875 people.
These families still lack running water, clean drinking water and a usable baseball field. We are going to take care of all 3 this season and you can be part of it!
Project #1: BASEBALL = $6,000 These communities thrive on the sport of baseball. The field is often the center of activity in the rural areas of the Dominican Republic. In playing together, the children find camaraderie, teamwork, sportsmanship, physical activity and hope for their futures. Food for the Hungry works with community leaders and coaches to make baseball part of the sustainable transformation that is happening in this community.
Project #2 - RUNNING WATER = $11,925 Includes building a community well, expanding existing infrastructure and providing more access points to the families in this community who do not currently have running water. Many, many hours a day are spent fetching water for household needs keeping kids out of school and preventing other family supporting work.
Project #3 - CLEAN DRINKING WATER =$17,865 Water Purification System: Guazumita lacks access to clean water and therefore is exposed to water borne illnesses that keep children out of school, elevate medical costs and continue the cycle of poverty. A water purification system will provide this community with the means to purify their current water source giving them access to safe and clean water.
What if baseball not only inspired kids to dream, but also provided for their basic needs? I believe it can. Baseball is ending poverty in the Dominican Republic through Striking Out Poverty!
Striking Out Poverty is a “first-of-its-kind” campaign by Food for the Hungry to meet the most urgent needs in nine of the most vulnerable communities in the Dominican Republic. Using solutions that are innovative and community-specific to the complex view of poverty, Food for the Hungry contributes to community-owned transformations that empower children, families and communities to invest in their own development.
